The theme is racial prejudice. She's there supporting Tom and it surprises the people.

The punishment doesn't fit the crime. Boo Radley didn't deserve to be locked up for so long even after his father passed. He needed to be able to go out and mature.

Tom Robinson & Boo Radley are the novels two mocking birds. They never harmed anyone through out the story. It is a sin to kill a mockingbird because they are harmless. These two characters were forced to do something they didn't want to do.
